P Y C A D E L I A S M I T H / P E N F O L D / V O I D . . . Café Mamba, Taunton Thursday the 16th August was a date imprinted on every 6th form students head, it was AS-Level and more importantly A-Level results night and Mamba was absolutely packed. As expected there was a mixture of emotions about but everyone whether they were drowning their sorrows or celebrating their success was up for having a good time and the bands chosen for tonight's event were exactly the right ones, something for everyone. The first band to play were Void. Dressed in matching black and white suits they played a tight set although the audience response wasn't really that great, the drinking had started upstairs and there was more of an interest in finding out how everyone did in their exams than watching the band. By the end though, Voids feel-good music had attracted a bigger crowd and people that had been seen crying their eyes out earlier had started to cheer up with the help of songs like 'Glass-eyed Girl.' Their music holds similarities to bands such as 'The Small Faces' and 'Reef.' The next band to play, 'Penfold' seem to be getting better and better. Since their last performance in Mamba they have grown in confidence, popularity, variety of style and talent on their chosen instruments. Their set had something for everyone, darker tunes for the "Oh fuck I haven't got the results I wanted." people and funky riffs and beats to bring them right back up again and help along the celebrations. The audience response was huge which made the performance even more impressive, everyone was dancing, singing and having a wicked time. About half an hour or so before Pyscadeliasmith were set to go onstage I was a bit worried to hear that in 45 minutes they had spent £65 on drinks for themselves and were heading for the stage. This didn't affect their performance though and I think they achieved everything a headlining act should do for an audience, raise a huge amount of anticipation and excitement throughout the club, had people jumping and singing along, dancing and jumping and everyone smiling. They performed a couple of new songs too which were also well received with the crowd. TEXT: SOPHIE ANNETT |
