Sounds Of The Underground was born on Thursday 23rd January 1999. Local band Vibracolour headlined, the show in a dimly lit, half empty Chambers. 25 gigs and 69 bands later, SOTU has become a well established, permanent fixture in the Taunton youth scene. Born out of the ashes of Priority ; an ill fated 4 night venture at the Priory Social Club, filled with recrimination, back stabbing and drug taking came SOTU. Designed to be an eclectic and credible live show, within the town centre, promoting bands with originality, attitude and vibrancy. After five nights at Chambers, SOTU moved to it's now regular venue; Café Mamba. Since then the night has developed a three band format, attracting bigger crowds and better bands. Acts have travelled as far away as Doncaster, Truro and London, offering a cheap and credible alternative to Dellers or The Toad. Aaron of Lewinski Recent local performances by Exeter based KIDS NEAR WATER have been followed by a Reading Festival appearance this Summer and a support slot with SUM 41. INGO STAR CRUISER, FICTION, JUDGE JOE YODA and TYLER have all received national exposure - but seen in Taunton first! Contrary to popular belief, profits, if there are any do not line the pockets of the promoters, but instead go into developing and improving the show. And of course the shows wouldn't be worth a thing without you guys. There are many people have helped along the way, to many to mention. But special thanks goes out to Matt Gunter who has provided the PA for most SOTU, Gareth at Chambers (things started with you mate!), our doormen and particularly Bob, whose contributions on an often drunken and aggressive door has been drunken and aggressive! Weekender would like to thank everyone who has made SOTU such a success, over the last 3 years especially our patrons and we look forward to bringing you the next 25. Sounds Of The Underground continues, throughout the year, on each third Thursday of the month.
